What is Cellulite?

Cellulite can appea
r at any time, even in women (or men) who exercise regularly, eat right and aren’t overweight. Although it may not appear overnight, it may seem like a sudden surprise for the person who steps in front of a mirror, perhaps while trying on a swimsuit, and sees some odd lumps, similar to cottage cheese or lumpy mashed potatoes. Most commonly found on the stomach and thighs, cellulite can appear almost anywhere on the body, particularly where there is excess skin.
So what is cellulite and what causes it? Many doctors feel that it is nothing more than fat, although it may be something of a mystery why some women get it and others do not. It is particularly frustrating when it appears in thin, normal weight women who still have cellulite. Even very thin women and celebrities such as Misha Barton and Kim Kardashian have cellulite. If a group of bathers were viewed at the beach, there could be a teenager with cellulite standing next to a heavier woman who doesn’t have an ounce of it.
Research indicates that genetics may play a factor, something that is obvious when viewing several women in a family who have cellulite. In short, cellulite may be inherited. This isn’t the happiest of news but there are treatments for cellulite. Women don’t have to be doomed to live with it forever. It also appears more often in women in their forties than those in their teens or twenties (although it can strike at any age). Nearly everyone who ages eventually gets cellulite. But there can be help for this condition.
Those who have cellulite might take comfort in the fact that only a very small proportion of people escape the challenge of dealing with it. Only about 25 percent of all people don’t have it somewhere on their body. It is very common, however frustrating. This is why so many women seek cellulite treatments every year. Odds are high that anyone who doesn’t eventually get it has had some sort of treatment.
While thin and normal weight women can get cellulite, it is also true that overweight women have it more often. Exercise may not get rid of it but can certainly help keep it from being so obvious. So all the advice that parents might have given to exercise regularly may have some truth – at least, when it comes to cellulite. Additional cellulite treatments may still be needed, however.
Those with cellulite may buy all sorts of clothes to cover their problem areas. They usually stick to jeans rather than shorts and long skirts rather than short ones. Luckily, cellulite is not a life-threatening condition but it still makes many women miserable. Caused by fat cells which strain against the skin, the results are the dimples and unsightly puckering that make many wince.
One unusual and relatively new cause of cellulite? There has been recent evidence that being anxious can actually increase both fat and cellulite production. This may be particularly true when it comes to cellulite in the hips and abdomen. Taking time to breathe deeply, take a long walk, have a bath or just enjoy the company of friends could actually slow down cellulite production. Since all these activities may be deeply pleasurable, taking time to pamper oneself and have fun could actually be one way to maximize cellulite treatments.
